What we look for

Shapes, and how your dog sleeps

Care labels vary — many covers are machine washable, though not all are suited to a tumble dryer.

Fill and support

A dog mattress built with a chambered or multi-section fill resists sagging in the middle, which is usually what ends a bed's useful life. Recycled-bottle fills are widespread now and hold up well. For older dogs, or any dog with joint stiffness, prioritise even supportive depth over plushness — a soft bed that bottoms out under weight offers less than a firmer one of the same thickness.

Blankets, travel and crates

A dog blanket does quiet, useful work: it protects a sofa or car seat, carries a familiar scent into a hotel or a relative's house, and washes far more easily than a whole bed. Lighter throws suit our weather better than heavy wool. For travel and crate use, look for mats that fold or roll down small, with a non-slip base and a surface that wipes clean.
