How this shortlist is made
A treat is a small thing given often, which is why its ingredient list deserves the same attention as a bag of food. Everything on this shelf is single-ingredient or close to it, with no grains, fillers or artificial preservatives, and where we can we favour treats made close to home. We keep the range of dog treats in Singapore short on purpose — what is left is a choice between good options, not a research project.
Freeze dried dog treats
Freeze-drying draws the moisture out at low temperature and leaves the rest — protein, aroma, flavour — much as it was. That aroma is the whole point. It is why freeze dried dog treats work so well as dog training treats, and why they still hold a dog's attention in a distracting car park. Most are feather-light and low in calories per piece, and they break down into smaller rewards easily, so a full class costs very little against the day's food.
Dehydrated dog treats
Dehydration works the other way, with gentle heat over hours, and gives you something firmer and crunchier. Jerky-style slices snap into whatever size you need; ready-bitesize pieces suit puppies, small breeds and cats with no breaking at all. And because good dehydrated dog treats carry no preservatives, they behave like real food — check the pack, and refrigerate once it is open.
Chews
A chew is not a snack, it is an activity. A natural chew gives a dog something to work at for half an hour, which is worth more on a rainy afternoon than any number of dog snacks, and most do quiet work on teeth along the way. Supervise, and match the size of the chew to the size of the dog.
Which one, and when
Training and recall work: small, strongly scented, low in calories. A fussy eater: crumble something rich over dinner rather than buying another bag. A sensitive stomach: stay single-protein and introduce one new thing at a time, so you know what caused what. A dog who chews through everything: hand him a proper chew and give your shoes a rest.
Keeping healthy dog treats healthy
Even the best treats are still calories. The usual guidance is to keep them to around a tenth of what your dog eats in a day, and to take the difference out of dinner after a heavy training session. Beyond that, variety earns its keep — rotating proteins keeps a dog interested, and keeps you from leaning on any single one.
